“Remember that there is a meaning beyond absurdity. Be sure that every little deed counts, that every word has power, and that we can, everyone, do our share to redeem the world, in spite of all absurdities, and all the frustrations, and all the disappointment. And above all, remember that the meaning of life is to live life as if it were a work of art.”
-Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s final interview with NBC-TV journalist Carl Stern, Feb 4, 1972
Summer Day by Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean —
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down —
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
+ Mary Oliver
Mica Smith-Dahl
I've chosen Mica Smith-Dahl because, even though we have only just recently met, she has been an amazing conversationalist, she is also very friendly and an incredible cook, among other things! Whenever I see her, she never treats me like I am just a kid instead, she engages in conversations with me, which feels very special. I have been lucky enough to have tried her food which is as delightful and amazing as her! Here are her quotes
“Nothing comes to sleepers but dreams’- Prince
This is representative of the notion that those who stay ‘asleep’ or those who are not fully present will only dream and will not turn those dreams to reality! Dreaming is important but more so is ACTION! I adore PRINCE
“Everywhere you’re going I’ve already been” and
“Don’t say I can’t just say I don’t know how to yet”
These are phrases my father says to us growing up I think its important for us as young people to be conscious of the fact that our elders and parents for that matter have been around the block once or twice... elders have immense contributions to add to any conversation for they are experience havers and knowledge keepers!
And for the second- this is something my father has told us since childrennnnnnn! It is a lesson I carry with me still,, this world is very brutal and cut throat, so much so that by the time many of us are even teenagers we have gathered so much FEAR of failure we refuse to even try. So afraid of others judging us not being the BEST at something (the root is capitalism) we refuse to try anything new, weather that be learning a new dance, language, recipe etc. anywho its an important thing to remember that LIFE IS LONG we are scholars of life, meaning if I’m intrigued by gardening, knitting, fishing, mountain climbing, botany, surfing, sewing what have you I have a whole entire life to learn it and at any and many points there will be things I don’t know.. but that is the exciting part LEARNING it
“Are you walking with purpose ?
A phrase my grandmother liked to ask…. meant to induce a momentary check in with oneself “ am I walking (doing things) in a direction towards things that will support me reaching my purpose, fulfillment or ori ( destiny) because if not you should reevaluate ASAP. A powerful mantra to ask yourself throughout the day week or month even; am I doing things? Have I been doing things that will push me closer towards my dreams? Am I surrounding myself with people who support the best version of myself? Have I been engaging with entities that will accelerate me to the version of myself I most want to be ?
I have chosen Sean Creighton because he is so funny, kind, spontaneous and more, he never fails to make me laugh! He is an amazing dad, son, and husband! To his dad jokes to his serious moments, He’s the best dad I could have ever wanted and more! I love you pops! Without further ado hear are his quotes!
“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.”
-Ryunosuke Satoro
“So much depends upon a red wheelbarrow…”
-William Carlos Williams
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
-Maya Angelou
“We live not for ourselves, but for each other.”
-Jean Toomer
I chose Laura because she is a wonderful wife and mother. Whenever I see her she has always been affectionate and kind!
Laura’s perfect day (after coffee and a chocolate croissant) would begin at the beach on the shores of Lake Michigan, strolling along, listening to the waves, and filling pockets up with pretty stones. After lunch and a little rest, a visit to a few thrift stores for some more treasure hunting. Then dinner outside somewhere with family and friends, a sunset, and in bed with a Louise Penny book on Kindle. Laura:
1: Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh?" he whispered. "Yes, Piglet?" "Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand. "I just wanted to be sure of you.
― AA Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
2: I grow old ... I grow old ...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
—TS Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”
3: “Understand that the more deeply you hold your ideals, the more you are morally obligated to be pragmatic. Because ideals that are not implemented do nothing but make you feel morally superior. They never fed a hungry kid, they never cleaned up a polluted river, they never built a road that got people anywhere. So yeah, you should be pragmatic after you are idealistic. Pragmatism in the service of idealism is what you need. Idealism without pragmatism is just a way to flatter your ego.”
— Rep. Barney Frank
4: “Only connect!”
— EM Forster, Howard’s End
